Gowns: A Guide to Bridal Necklines

Necklines:

ASYMMETRICAL – most commonly described as a one-shoulder dress.  That is, only one shoulder has a sleeve and the other arm is loose.

BOAT – goes from shoulder to shoulder following the curves of the collarbone.

FICHU – similar to the portrait but wraps more of the shoulders.

HALTER – may or may not be on a backless dress.  This neckline has straps which wrap around and tie at the back of the neck.

HIGH COLLAR - a fitted collar sitting high on the neck.

JEWEL - rounded neckline circling the base of the neck.

OFF-THE-SHOULDER  - this fits below the shoulders and has sleeves that cover part of the arms.

PORTRAIT – this neckline sits away from the neck and shoulders.  It goes around the shoulders and then comes together at the front centre.

QUEEN-ANNE – sits high at the back of the neck and then low in the front revealing dιcolletage.

SCOOP – shaped like a “u” in the front.

SPAGETTI – neckline is similar to the strapless but has thin little straps going over the shoulders.

SQUARE – this neckline sits lower in the front in the shape of a half square.

STRAPLESS – is usually cut straight across and fitted through the bustline.

SWEETHEART – front neckline is shaped like the top of a heart.

TANK – has a u-shaped front with either thick or narrow straps over the shoulders.

V-NECK – shaped like a v in the front.
