Invitations: A Printing Glossary

The cost of invitations is not only determined by the type of paper, embellishments, etc., but also by the printing method used.  Below you will find a list of the most commonly used printing methods you can use.  With so many choices, you will be sure to find one that not only looks great, but is cost-effective.

BLIND-EMBOSSING - A printing process that uses a dye to yield colourless letters and images with a raised surface.

EMBOSSING - Raises dimensional lettering, borders, and artwork from the surface in relief without printing.

ENGRAVING - A metal plate is engraved with text and the words are stamped onto the paper.   The letters look and feel raised from the surface of the paper.

LETTERPRESS - An image is inked to produce an impression which is transferred by placing paper aginst the image so that it appears stamped.

OFF-SET PRINTING - A rubber cylinder transfers inked letters onto paper.

THERMOGRAPHY - A heat-based process that fuses ink and resinous powder to create raised lettering.  This gives the look of engraving but is much cheaper.

WAX PRINTING - A versatile wax ink with a crisp quality along with plenty of colours to choose from. LASER - Using a laser printer and a cost effective way of printing.

CALLIGRAPHY - Artistic formal lettering which is usually done by hand.

DECKLE-EDGE - This paper has rough edges which is made to resemble handmade paper.

OVERLAYS - This is a piece of paper that sits atop the invitation card stock.

VELLUM - A type of decorative paper which can also go on top of an invitation.
