Receptions: Band vs. DJ

Pros of hiring a DJ:

  • DJ’s cost much less.
  • Can play a wider range of music through a large cd collection. This helps to keep a good flow to the night as well as to include all guests and age groups .
  • Can accommodate any size of room, filled with any number of guests with proper equipment.
  • You can be as specific as you want by providing a list of songs to be played or allowing guests to make their own requests.

Cons of hiring a DJ:

  • Usually DJ's have their own unique personality which means that you can get one who is really outspoken and likes doing their own thing. To ensure your dance is how you want it, set some guidelines first on what will be played, if the DJ will act as a Master of Ceremony, etc. That way, they'll be no surprises.
  • DJ's often come with enough audio and visual equipment for a concert hall. Be sure that your DJ is setting the right mood for you.

Pros of hiring a Band:

  • Entertaining for all guests.
  • You can hire a specific genre to be played like jazz, latin, blues, etc.
  • Creates a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.

Cons of hiring a Band:

  • Expensive. Because you are paying for each individual musician, this option can cost 5 times as much as a DJ.
  • Bands usually only play a specific genre of music as well as a certain selection of songs.
  • Requesting songs is usually not an option and music may not appeal to all guests.
  • Given that it’s live, it is hard to ensure how the music will sound and whether or not everything will go off without a hitch.
  • Musicians also need to take breaks. Find out how many and how long they will take to ensure a smooth evening.
