Money: Cost-Saving Tips

These days the average wedding costs about $32,000!  From start to finish there are so many details to consider when planning a wedding it's hard to know when and where you can cutback.  Here is a list of cost-saving tips to help you keep your wedding budget in check and keep you out of debt!

  • Have a wedding off-season - Setting the date between October and May will usually cost you less.  With so many people wanting to get married in the summer months most venues are often booked one to two years in advance and offer few discounts because of it.  By choosing a wedding date in the off-season most ceremony and reception sites will be available and will usually provide incentives and discounts for booking at that time.
  • Get married on a Friday night, a Sunday or even on a holiday weekend - For years brides and grooms have traditionally been married on Saturdays but why not choose an evening wedding on a Friday?  Not only will you find more availability, the rates are usually less.  By hosting your wedding on a Sunday, you will be able to save on the cost of food and alcohol by forgoing the sitdown dinner and hosting a wonderful brunch or luncheon instead.
  • Choose local and in-season flowers - Buying flowers in the off-season can result in a much higher floral bill since the flowers are usually imported.  By choosing wedding flowers that are in current season you will be sure to save on your total bill.  Pick roses, calla lilies, carnations, freesia, etc. that are available all year long.
  • Set limits on the bar and serve signature drinks - By setting limits on when the bar will be open, for example, one hour before dinner and one hour after dinner you can minimize the cost of your overal bar tab.  Also, offer guests signature wedding drinks like champagne with peach nectar or only serve wine and beer and you will be able to keep your bar bill in check.
  • Choose the perfect location - By choosing a location that you love, or one that has natural beauty, you will not need to spend as much money on flowers and decor.
