Linens: A Classic Guide to Towels

Towels are another aspect of the bridal registry.  Every household needs these items and requesting them as a wedding gift is a great way to stock up.  When choosing the towels for the bridal registry, keep in mind the colour scheme of the bathroom/s.  If that decision hasn’t yet been made, perhaps asking for towels in neutral tones such as White, Gray, Black and Cream and later adding more colourful towels. Don’t be afraid to ask for good quality towels. Mary Lou Serratore one of the knowledgeable staff at Kingsmills in London, Ontario says, “the thickness of the towel plays an important role in absorbency and durability.” Egyptian Cotton – Is a high quality fabric made from the finest grade of cotton grown in the Nile Valley in Egypt.  It has a fine, extra long and strong staple fiber, which gives it a rich, thick feel.  Longer staple fibers produce a softer fabric.  Some believe that Egyptian cotton may have been derived from the marriage of Sea Island cotton and Peruvian cotton.  This high absorbency towel is durable and long lasting making it a more expensive. Micro-Cotton – Is a soft, thick and all natural cotton towel, which is made from Sea Island cotton, a West Indian cotton fiber.  It has a 1 ½ to 1 ¾ inch staple and the yarn is made from an extremely high grade of cotton, which feels silky to the skin.  Micro-Cotton towels absorbs water instantaneously and are lint free.  These towels are environmentally friendly with azo free reactive dyes and no chemicals are used for enhancement purposes, which make it an excellent towel for skin sensitive people. All four sides are hemmed for durability and the natural softness can be intensified by occasionally washing without detergents. 100% Cotton – Is an all-natural fiber and is grown in the United States as well as other countries.  It has a shorter staple but is still absorbent and but will not have the luxurious feel of the Egyptian cotton and the Micro-cotton making it a less expensive towel.Good quality towels should withstand many years of usage.  Most bath sets can include a large bath sheet or bath towel, a hand or fingertip towel and a wash/facecloth. Even though dishwashers are the norm, tea/dish towels are still a must in every home.  Register for good quality tea/dish towels and dishcloths. Linen – Has strong fibers, which gives it a durable and long lasting quality that could be passed down through generations.  Linen is lint free and wonderful for drying crystal and glasses. 50% Linen/50% Cotton Blend – This cotton combination is a good quality towel with the linen fibers for lint free drying and cotton for absorbency. 100% Cotton – This tea/dish towel will be less expensive but is still a hard working towel with plenty of absorbency. Micro-Cotton – This is the Cadillac of tea/dishtowels with super absorbency and a soft, thick feel, making it a more expensive tea/dish towel. Don’t be timid to register for plenty of bath sets and dishtowel sets.  It is amazing how quick one household goes through towels.  This will save on footsteps to the washer or laundry room.
